OpenAI made the announcement Wednesday (October 9) at the Tech Week event in Singapore. It is understood that the company is looking for office space locally and plans to hire five to 10 employees by the end of the year. According to the information on the company's website, these positions cover jobs in marketing, security, technical functions, and customer contact.
Singapore is one of four cities where OpenAI has opened a new office. Three more new offices are located in Paris, Brussels and New York.
"We look forward to the multiplier effect of this initiative, spurring new collaborations and attracting more leading AI companies to the region," Fu said. ”
The company noted that the initiatives highlight Singapore's leadership in technology and AI, as well as the growing demand for advanced AI tools in the Asia-Pacific region. China's ChatGPT user-to-population ratio is one of the highest in the world, and the number of weekly active users has doubled since the beginning of the year.
OpenAI will host its first developer day event in Singapore on November 21, bringing together developers and start-ups in the AI space in the region.
CEO Sam Altman said in a statement: "Singapore has a wealth of technology leadership experience, it is a leader in artificial intelligence and recognises the potential of this technology to solve society's toughest problems and boost economic prosperity. We are excited to partner with the country's thriving AI ecosystem and government to expand the APAC market." ”
Dr Teo Eng Xi, Senior Director, AI Products at Singapore's National AI Core, said: "This effort will improve the availability and quality of data in Southeast Asia and encourage the further development and application of AI models and solutions in the region. ”
OpenAI, the parent company of AI chatbot ChatGPT, will set up a regional center in Singapore by the end of this year, the company's second Asia-Pacific office after opening an office in Tokyo, Japan, in April.
Last week, the company closed a new round of funding of more than $6.6 billion, one of the largest private placements in history, valuing OpenAI to $157 billion.
In addition, the company will work more closely with government partners such as the Singapore Economic Development Board to support Malaysia's AI ecosystem and help shape an AI-driven future for all.
To support the growing demand, OpenAI has established a team in Singapore as a hub to support customers and partners across the region, strengthening relationships with governments, businesses, and institutions across the Asia-Pacific region. The company has appointed Chia Ka Ho as Head of International Operations, who will manage the company's international operations and global expansion plans from the Singapore office.
